Lawn Care Continues, Even When Summer Ends

Now that summer is coming to an end, it is time to begin thinking about how to make sure your yard continues to look great throughout the upcoming fall season! Having the perfect, picturesque yard year-round is everyone’s dream. However, to achieve this, you must tailor your landscaping techniques to the season you are in.

As is in any season, in order to keep a lawn looking fresh and clean, the first step is to make sure it is clear of any debris. Which means grab that rake and collect those fallen leaves! In addition to this, you will need to make sure that you are controlling the growth of any weeds. Weeds, just like all plants, are more active in their growth in the fall, so you must be diligent in applying herbicides so that the issue is handled and does not continue into the spring season.

Another important spring/summer practice to carry out into the fall is lawn mowing. Mowing is crucial because it allows sunlight to reach the crown of the grass, keeping it alive! One thing to keep in mind for fall mowing is that you need to gradually lower your mower blade, not taking more than 1/3 of the blade of grass per cut!

With fall around the corner, you may also want to consider aerating the soil. Aerating the lawn allows oxygen, water, and fertilizer to reach your grass’s roots by punching small holes into the dirt. You can either rent a machine to do this yourself or hire a landscaper.

Upon aeration, your lawn will be more susceptible to both fertilization and irrigation efforts. Fertilizing in the fall will allow you to have more success with your grass growth, since the fertilizer will deliver essential nutrients for the grass to grow deep roots now and to keep nutrients on reserve for a healthy start next spring. The best time to do this is mid to late September, as the temperature begins to drop.

Once fertilization has taken place, it is important to make sure you are properly irrigating your yard. In order to make sure your grass planting efforts are not ill-spent, properly watering your growing greenery is crucial. Effective irrigation can be executed either through manual watering or with an electronic-installed irrigation system.

If all these things seem overwhelming, or too much for you to manage with your busy schedule, you are in luck. Ground Works Land Design specializes in lawn maintenance and can assist you in your fall landscaping needs!
